Heather felt, for the moment—for the first time in a very long time—content.

She rested there on the couch, cradled by Gearon, her Mekron Lord’s warm, powerful body wrapped protectively around her own. Once again, she felt like a child nestled in his giant arms… but it was a secure and wonderful feeling.

She was dozing, in a shallow sleep-state at best. But she didn’t want to open her eyes. She knew that they had little time. Her time with Gearon would likely be ending.

Funny that the prospect of losing him should bother her more than the threat of her own looming death… But maybe that was just it, she wanted to live and stay with him—no other future seemed desirable.

So for now, she closed her eyes, just trying to savor a few more moments nestled in the arms of the man she loved.

She heard a few faint sounds—clanking, gurgling—and she ignored them. There was a dull thump… the ship settling on the ocean bottom, perhaps? Gearon hadn’t stirred, and so she tried to relax again.

It was only when there was a clank from the direction of the airlock, followed by the distinctive slurping of the biofilter membrane, that she jerked up.

Gearon was already rising, relaxing his grip on her and gently easing her aside, standing up to face the intruder.

A figure emerged through the biofilter membrane.

Slim, female, straight platinum blonde hair, pale—Enpathian.

The disc in her hand hissed and a small sphere of yellow energy blasted from it, striking Gearon’s chest and knocking him backwards. He fell, unmoving, to the floor, tiny yellow sparks dancing over his body for a moment before dissipating.

GEARON!

He was unmoving, was he hurt, was he--?

“Hello, Heather,” said the Enpathian. “I am Jessam. In answer to your unspoken questions: No, he is not permanently injured, just incapacitated. Yes, it hurt him somewhat. He’s strong as a bull ramaloth; there’s no way I could knock him out without hurting him a bit.”
